Wind Gusts Reach Record-Breaking Speeds, Causing Widespread Damage

Houston, TX - May 16, 2024 - The National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed that a severe storm system brought high winds and a tornado to Houston, causing extensive damage to the downtown area. Wind gusts reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour, rivaling the strongest wind speeds ever recorded in Houston.

The NWS confirmed one EF1 tornado touched down near the northwest side of the city, but damage assessments are still ongoing to determine the full extent of the storm's impact. Video footage has captured the tornado ripping through Houston, destroying homes, businesses, and infrastructure.
