Okinawa Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Advisory, Lifted Later

Strong Quake Hits Taiwan, Japan Issues Evacuation Advisory

Southern Okinawa Prefectures Affected, No Major Damage Reported

Tokyo, April 3 (Reuters) - Japan's Okinawa Prefecture was placed under an evacuation advisory on Wednesday afternoon after a powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Taiwan. The advisory was later lifted after no major damage or significant tsunami activity was observed.

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.5, occurred shortly before 8 am Taiwanese time and was centered in the Pacific Ocean off Hualien County. The quake was also felt strongly in Okinawa, which is located about 600 kilometers (373 miles) southwest of Taiwan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) initially issued a tsunami advisory for parts of Okinawa Prefecture, but it was lifted by 3 pm local time. The JMA said that no major tsunami waves were expected to hit the prefecture.

There were no immediate reports of any major damage or injuries in Okinawa. However, authorities are still assessing the situation and urging residents to remain vigilant.

The earthquake is the largest to hit Okinawa since 2016 when a magnitude 7.3 quake caused minor damage and injuries. Earthquakes are relatively common in Japan, which is located in a seismically active zone.
